FiveM: Legacy or Enhanced, which version to choose?
Two versions of GTA V, two FiveMs. Which to choose in 2026? A clear comparison for players and server owners.
Since FiveM for GTA 5 Enhanced arrived in early access (July 21, 2026), players get a choice between two versions: Legacy (the historical edition) and Enhanced (the next-gen PC one). Which to pick? It depends on who you are. Here’s a clear comparison.
Legacy vs Enhanced at a glance
| Legacy | Enhanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Standard | Ray tracing, DLSS/FSR, HDR |
| Networking | P2P + OneSync | Client-server, sync up to 120 Hz |
| Script runtime | Mono | .NET (modern) |
| Protected paid assets | Yes (Asset Escrow) | Not yet (early access) |
| Maturity | Battle-tested | Young, some bugs |
Enhanced: who is it for?
Enhanced brings a real technical leap — the best rendering (see what’s new in GTA 5 Enhanced), smoother synchronisation and a modernised runtime (see what’s new in FiveM for GTA 5 Enhanced).
Prefer it if:
- you want the best visuals (ray tracing, DLSS) and a machine that can use them;
- you play on servers that have already migrated;
- you’re building a standalone server (Lua/JS) with no dependency on protected paid resources.
The main catch: Asset Escrow (the system that protects and distributes paid resources) isn’t available yet in early access — hence the next point.
Legacy: still relevant
In 2026, Legacy remains the most battle-tested and most populated edition for many large servers. Prefer it if:
- you want to join a major RP server that hasn’t migrated yet;
- your PC is modest (Legacy is lighter — see our PC specs guide);
- on the server side, you rely on protected paid resources: better to wait for Asset Escrow on Enhanced.
So, which one?
- Player, recent PC, want the best-looking → Enhanced, joining already-migrated servers.
- Player following a specific community → whatever version your server runs (check its Discord).
- Standalone server owner → Enhanced is reasonable right now.
- Owner relying on paid assets → stay on Legacy until Asset Escrow lands.
Long term, Enhanced is the future-facing base: the ecosystem is migrating, and that’s where what comes next is built. Want to try a server already running on Enhanced? Come to Chased, our 1v1 car-chase duels — and if you’re new, start by installing FiveM for GTA 5 Enhanced.
