What is FiveM? Everything you need to get started
Everyone mentions it, nobody explains it. What exactly is FiveM, how does it differ from GTA Online, and how do you get started?
FiveM is a multiplayer modification for GTA V that lets you play on community servers instead of Rockstar’s official GTA Online. Each server writes its own rules, jobs, economy and game modes — and you join them with your normal copy of GTA V on PC.

FiveM isn’t just GTA RP
This is the most widespread misunderstanding, and it comes from the fact that roleplay servers are the most visible — they’re the ones filling Twitch. But roleplay is only one use of FiveM among others.
FiveM is a platform, not a game. What you find depends entirely on the server you connect to:

Put differently: you can happily play hundreds of hours on FiveM without ever doing a minute of roleplay. If improvised theatre doesn’t appeal to you, you aren’t missing out on anything: driving servers take seconds to pick up, whereas an RP server often asks for an application and a period of adjustment.

FiveM vs GTA Online: the difference
Both are played online in Los Santos, and that’s where the similarity ends.
- GTA Online is Rockstar’s official mode. One shared content set for everyone, a closed economy, progress tied to your Rockstar account. You can’t change anything.
- FiveM is a constellation of independent servers. Each adds its own vehicles, scripts, jobs and rules. Your progress belongs to the server, not to Rockstar.
The point that reassures most beginners: the two worlds are walled off from each other. Playing on FiveM touches neither your GTA Online character, nor your money, nor your progress.
What you need to play
- A legal copy of GTA V on PC — Steam, Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher. It’s the only cost, and if you already own the game it’s already covered.
- An active Rockstar Games account.
- The FiveM client, free, downloaded only from the official site fivem.net — it comes in two versions, see the next section.
There is no console version. FiveM relies on modifying the PC game, which consoles don’t allow. Nothing suggests that will change.
You don’t need to install anything else: each server automatically sends you its own resources when you join.
Legacy or Enhanced: which version?
Since July 2026, FiveM comes in two editions, because GTA V itself has two on PC: Legacy (the original edition) and Enhanced (the next-gen version, with ray tracing and DLSS).
A warning if you’re starting out: Enhanced is still in early access. Better looking, but younger, with known bugs — and Legacy is still the more populated edition for now, especially on large RP servers. So the deciding factor isn’t “which looks best” but which version the server you want to join runs on: check its Discord before installing anything.

How to get started

One tip for your first session: start with a server that has no application process. Large RP servers often require a whitelist and a written application, which is discouraging when you just want to see what it looks like. Frequently asked questions
Is FiveM free?
Yes, entirely. The client is free and the vast majority of servers are too. You only need to own GTA V on PC. The details — donations, paid perks, pay-to-win servers to avoid — are in our guide on playing FiveM for free.
Is FiveM legal?
Yes. FiveM is developed by Cfx.re, a studio that has been owned by Rockstar Games since August 2023: modded multiplayer is officially endorsed by the game’s publisher. It uses your legitimate copy of GTA V and runs on servers separate from GTA Online.
Can I get banned from GTA Online for using it?
No: FiveM doesn’t modify your GTA V installation, so you can switch between the two freely. Do beware of mods installed by hand into your GTA V folder, however — those really do get you banned from GTA Online. FiveM needs none of them: servers deliver their own content.
Do I need GTA Online to play FiveM?
No. You need GTA V, the base game. GTA Online isn’t required.
Is FiveM available on PS5 or Xbox?
No, PC only, and that isn’t likely to change.
Do I have to play roleplay?
No. RP is the most publicised use, not the only one — racing, drift, chase, deathmatch and freeroam all exist too.
