You’ve surely seen the term “GTA RP” on Twitch or YouTube. Behind those two letters is the phenomenon that revived GTA V: roleplay. Here’s what it is, how it works, and how to get into it.
GTA RP, defined
GTA RP (roleplay) means playing a character in a living GTA V city, on a FiveM server. Instead of doing whatever you want like in GTA Online, each player takes on a role — cop, mechanic, robber, doctor, taxi driver — and interacts while staying in character. It’s improvised theatre at scale, with rules.
How it works
- In-character (IC) / out-of-character (OOC). In game, you speak and act as your character (IC). “Out of character” (OOC) is reserved for technical matters and clearly flagged.
- An economy and jobs. Most servers have money systems, jobs, properties, vehicles to buy — a real parallel life.
- Rules. To preserve immersion, serious servers impose rules: no “fail RP”, no random violence (RDM), respect others’ characters.
- Voice. Immersion runs mostly on proximity voice chat: you hear those near you.
Whitelist vs open: the big difference
- Open (public) server: you join directly. Great for discovering, but immersion is more variable.
- Whitelist server: access is filtered (application, interview, rules quiz). More demanding, but far more serious and consistent roleplay. The big, reputable RP cities are usually whitelisted.
Serious or casual?
- Serious RP: deep immersion, strict rules, characters followed over time. For those who really want to “live” a second life.
- Casual / semi-RP: more relaxed, fewer rules, jump in and have fun. Good for starting out.
How to get started
- Install FiveM (it’s free — see how to play FiveM for free).
- Pick a beginner-friendly server (open or accessible whitelist).
- Read its rules and join its Discord.
- Create a coherent character and stay in it.
RP isn’t the only way to play
Roleplay is FiveM’s best-known face, but far from the only one. If improvised theatre isn’t your thing and you prefer pure competition, the FiveM ecosystem also offers racing, drift and car chases.
