FiveM crashing: the complete fix guide
FiveM crashing on launch, during loading or mid-game? Here are the causes by crash type and the fixes that solve most cases.
A FiveM crash is almost always fixable — as long as you spot when it happens. Crashes fall into three families: at startup, during server connection, and mid-game. Here’s the diagnosis and the fixes, from the most effective to the most specific.
The reflex that fixes most cases: clear the cache
It’s the most effective fix for client-side issues. Close FiveM, then delete the contents of the cache folder (in FiveM’s install directory, a cache / data folder). Relaunch: FiveM rebuilds what it needs. Try this before anything else.
1. Startup crash (before you even see anything)
Almost always one of these three culprits:
- Corrupted cache → clear the cache (see above).
- Outdated FiveM build → update FiveM (or reinstall the latest version from the official site).
- Antivirus blocking it → add an exception for FiveM and GTA V in your antivirus (Windows Defender included). Antivirus software often mistakes FiveM for an intruder.
Also consider missing Visual C++ packages: install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, a classic cause of startup crashes.
2. Crash during server connection
Here the issue usually comes from what the server sends you:
- Incompatible or heavy server resources → try again later, or test another server to isolate the problem.
- Insufficient RAM → close background apps; 16 GB is a comfortable minimum on busy servers (see our PC specs guide).
- Corrupted server cache → clear the cache.
3. Mid-game crash
- Graphics drivers → update your NVIDIA or AMD drivers to the latest version (a frequent cause of in-game crashes).
- A specific server’s script or memory leak → if it only crashes on one server, it’s probably on their end; report it on their Discord.
- Overheating / unstable overclock → watch temperatures, revert to stock clocks if you overclock.
Quick checklist
- Clear the cache (most effective).
- Update FiveM and GPU drivers.
- Antivirus exceptions for FiveM + GTA V.
- Install the latest Visual C++.
- Close background apps, check free RAM.
- Verify the integrity of GTA V’s files.
GTA 5 Enhanced case
On Enhanced (early access), known bugs remain. Make sure you’re using the right FiveM build and that GTA 5 Enhanced is up to date (launch it once in single-player). If FiveM can’t find the game, see our dedicated guide: FiveM can’t find GTA V.
Once stable, you can play match after match — for example on Chased, our 1v1 car-chase duels.
