FiveM can't find GTA V: fix the GTA5.exe error

"FiveM couldn't find your GTA V installation" or "GTA5.exe not found": here's why, and how to fix it in a few minutes.

It’s one of the most common blockers on first launch: FiveM can’t locate your GTA V installation, or shows something like “the selected folder does not contain GTA5.exe” / “your game folder doesn’t look like a valid GTA V installation”. Good news: it’s a few-minute fix.

Why FiveM can’t find GTA V

In the vast majority of cases, one of these:

  • GTA V is installed in a non-standard path (another drive, renamed folder).
  • The Rockstar Games Launcher was updated and moved or re-verified the files.
  • Steam or the Epic Games Store moved the game folder (library move, reinstall).
  • Legacy / Enhanced mix-up: you’re pointing at the wrong version of the game.

The fix: point FiveM to the right folder

  1. Launch GTA V once in single-player, via your usual launcher (Rockstar / Steam / Epic), then quit. This forces the launcher to write the correct files.
  2. Open FiveM, go to its settings, then the game path option.
  3. Select the folder that contains the game’s executable (the one with GTA5.exe in it).
  4. Confirm: FiveM re-detects the installation and the message disappears.

How to find the right folder

  • Steam: right-click GTA V → ManageBrowse local files.
  • Epic Games: library → GTA V → ManageOpen install folder.
  • Rockstar Launcher: SettingsGTA V → the install location is shown there.

The correct folder has the game executable at its root — that’s the one to point at, not a subfolder.

Special case: GTA 5 Enhanced

Since 2026, FiveM comes in a dedicated build for GTA 5 Enhanced. Check two things:

  • You’re using the FiveM client matching your game version (Enhanced with Enhanced).
  • GTA 5 Enhanced is up to date: launch it once in single-player to let Rockstar download the latest files before switching back to FiveM.

For a full install from scratch, follow our guide how to install FiveM for GTA 5 Enhanced.

If it still doesn’t work

  • Verify the game files’ integrity (Steam/Epic/Rockstar offer a repair option).
  • Run FiveM as administrator once, so it can write its path.
  • Make sure you have enough free disk space.

Once FiveM is connected to your GTA V, you can join any server — for example Chased, our 1v1 car-chase duels on GTA 5 Enhanced.
