Controller on FiveM: the driving settings that actually matter

A keyboard steers at 0 % or 100 %. A stick does everything in between. That gap is where fine driving lives — here's how to set it up.

On FiveM, the “keyboard or controller” question comes up constantly, and the honest answer is more nuanced than what you usually read. It isn’t a question of skill: plenty of excellent drivers play on keyboard and win. It’s a question of input type, and therefore of what each device lets you do — or stops you doing.

Here’s what genuinely separates them, and the settings worth fixing once a pad is plugged in.

The real difference: binary vs analogue

A keyboard key has two states: released, or pressed. When you hold your steering key, the game receives 100 % steering lock. Release it and it receives 0 %. There is nothing in between.

An analogue stick sends a continuous value across its whole travel. You can ask for a quarter of lock, half, three quarters — and crucially, you can move between them smoothly.

On a straight, none of this matters. It matters enormously in three specific situations:

  • holding a slide. A slide is kept alive by constant micro-corrections, often tiny ones. On keyboard you can only correct by tapping: you alternate between 0 % and 100 %, which produces a sawtooth input, and a slide that either escapes or snaps back too hard;
  • tightening an apex. Corners are rarely taken at constant lock: you open, tighten, open again. On a stick that’s one gesture; on a keyboard it’s a series of pulses;
  • high-speed stability. At speed, full lock is almost always too much. Full lock is the only thing a keyboard has to offer.

The keyboard does have a genuine upside: it’s instant and perfectly repeatable. No deadzone, no mechanical slop, the same input every single time. That’s why keyboard players hold their own against pad players: they compensate with a consistency of timing that a stick doesn’t hand you for free.

The controller is simply more forgiving when it comes to fine driving. It absorbs the approximations that a keyboard turns into a spin.

Setting 1: deadzone

The deadzone is the portion of stick travel the game ignores before it starts responding. It exists for a reason: a worn stick drifts slightly at rest, and without a deadzone your car would pull to one side on its own.

The trade-off is easy to grasp:

  • deadzone too large → micro-corrections vanish. You lose the exact thing you picked up a controller for: the stick only responds once the movement is already decisive;
  • deadzone too small → the car wanders by itself and you spend the straights chasing a straight line.

The right method: lower it progressively — in Steam Input, in your manufacturer’s software or in your pad’s own utility — until drift appears at rest, then bring it back up one notch. You end up with the most precision your hardware will allow. This setting belongs to your pad, not to the game: GTA V only exposes a deadzone for aiming and camera, never for the steering stick. And a brand new controller tolerates far less deadzone than one with three years of service on it.

Setting 2: sensitivity

Sensitivity defines what output a given stick position produces — in other words, how quickly you go from 0 to full lock.

  • Too high: the first part of the travel becomes twitchy. You react fast, but you over-correct, and over-correction is the number one cause of lost control in a chase.
  • Too low: the car feels heavy and you miss the quick saves when the rear steps out.

The right value depends heavily on what you’re driving. A heavy rear-wheel-drive car that slides for a long time wants smoothness; a grippy, darty hatchback tolerates far more bite. If you only change one thing after plugging a pad in, make it this — and tune it while driving, not from the menu.

Be careful about where this actually gets set: GTA V’s sensitivity sliders cover the camera and aiming, not steering. The steering stick’s response curve is shaped in the same place as the deadzone, at controller level. FiveM itself adds no sensitivity menu: the base-game settings are the ones that apply online.

Setting 3: analogue triggers

This is the most underrated controller advantage, and it’s more decisive than the stick.

Triggers are analogue: they measure how far you press. So you can ask for 30 % brake, or 60 % throttle. On a keyboard, braking means full brake and accelerating means full throttle.

What that unlocks:

  • modulated braking — shedding exactly the speed you need on corner entry instead of locking up and losing all steering;
  • throttle control through a slide — the right pedal steers a slide far more than the wheel does. Metering throttle precisely is what separates a clean exit from a spin;
  • getting back on power — feeding throttle progressively out of a corner without breaking traction.

Setting 4: the camera, badly underrated

Nobody files this under “driving settings”. It’s still the one that changes how you read a line the most.

Third person is still the reference in a chase, for a mechanical reason rather than an aesthetic one: you see your own car’s angle. Mid-slide, knowing how far the rear has stepped out is the single most important piece of information available, and the outside view hands it to you at a glance.

First person is more precise for placing a wheel to the centimetre and gives a far better sense of speed — but it strips your peripheral vision, which is expensive when a pursuer arrives from the side.

Practical advice: pick one and stay with it. The real problem isn’t which camera you choose, it’s switching reference points constantly. Racing lines are memorised through a view, not in the abstract.

Vibration feedback

Few people keep it on, which is a shame. Vibration tells you about contacts and surface changes before your eyes have finished processing them. That’s free information arriving through a channel that isn’t already saturated — your eyes very much are.

The only defensible reason to switch it off is if it bothers you physically over long sessions. Otherwise, leave it on.

And hold on to the main point: a controller isn’t required to be good. It’s more forgiving, and it gives access to corrections a keyboard simply can’t make — but a consistent keyboard player beats a sloppy pad player any day of the week.
